Chapter 23 + Visual sources

Chapter 23

This Chapter was about globalization and the change in economy. It showcased the different ranges of growth in the economy from back in the 70's to the 2000's. I felt like this chapter was really relevant especially with how the economy is now and how much the US is in debt right now. As unfortunate is it is the debt keeps getting deeper and deeper which really sucks. We keep expecting things to get better in the economy and they only get worse and worse.

Visual Sources

I chose the image on page 1183 where a sweatshop has been captured. I remember growing up as a kid and hearing about sweatshops all the time. I didn't understand what they were as a little girl but the more and more I grew u I understood what they were, and came to find out a lot of the clothing brands I wear is made in a sweatshop. My history teacher even let us get a little taste of how a sweatshop was run during a class activity back in high school and from then on I tried to stay away from places that treated their workers like I was given a taste of that day. In sweatshops, not only are the workers treated unfairly but they aren't paid enough either. The minimum wage today is 10$ and I believe they don't even make half of that unless things have changed. I chose this specifically because I wish there was more awareness on how people are treated in the work environment and that people did their best to make a stand against the brutal forces against the workers.

Chapter 22 Documents (p.1120-1135)

I chose to blog about the visual source on page 1133 that show canes the promise land of Israel. This poster was to persuade people to migrate and even donate to make this land better than what the picture depicts. I found it to be very persuasive myself because the artist really made sure to make the land beautiful and used vibrant colors to showcase if you moved there you would be happier than where you were. I think this was a great way to try and pry people away from their homes. They definitely knew how to use propaganda to their advantage. On another note this is also an unfair way to try and capture the people's eye. I think this because wherever the people were before takes away from that land and forces the other lands to try and find ways to bring more people in. So to me its just a circle that the land owners would be going through at this time.

Chapter 22 (1087-1119)

Chapter 22

The topics that this section discusses that was interesting to me were: Ghandi and South Africa's fight for independence. I remember reading about Ghandi a few years back and always hearing his name but, the things he stood for did not stick to my brain. After reading this section I have found out even more information about him. For instance, he was a lawyer that worked in south Africa that had his first taste of racism which had pushed him to change the way things were and unite the people. He started off with the Hindus and Muslims. And influenced by Ghandi, Nelson Mandela decided to take action in trying to persuade the whites not to be the sole keeper of the funds in a non violent way. After all it was this way due to the color on their backs and not their intelligence. Those that took power of South Africa didn't know if the towns people could control their own lands or not but assumed they could.

Chapter 21 (p.1035-1068) + Documents (p.1069-1085)

Chapter 21

The subject discussed in this chapter is communism through the years. While most popular in Russia, other countries like China and Cuba also ran on a communist based government. This form of political rules were based on the interest's of the lower class rather than middle class. Therefore they helped more with lower class than the middle. Just like any other country at this time at this time women had to fight for their rights, and those that did try their best to find better ways at going about life. Which meant they had to lower themselves to getting abortions, and divorces for their own equality. This pained me to read because of what women had to do just to get on the good graces of men at this point. Women had to fight a lot of battles for equality and even had to lose children which I found to be very unfair.

Documents

The image I chose was on page 1083 where a portrait of a woman working is placed. To me this image represented the fact that women had to work very hard for the things they wanted at this time and, that even meant doing hard labor like men. The painter portrayed the woman in the painting a happy from the smile on her face which I thought was a little controversial since I doubt women were happy to be in the position they were in at this time.

Chapter 20 (p.973-1017) + Documents (p.1018-1033)

Chapter 20

The discussion of this chapter was centered around the world wars. To introduce the section, the author reviewed the impactful industrial resolution, and followed up by describing how the first World War came about as well as the second. Next comes the different alliances that was made between countries at this time. This included: an alliance between Germany, Italy, and Hungarians as well as, the second triple alliance between Russia, France, and Britain. Because of these alliances and the means of protecting whom the countries were aligned with, world war 1 happened. This brough out a fight against the other team for things like control of weapons and colonies. The first War was involved with Germany, Britain, and the French, but the US. I found this section really interesting due to the fact that I didn't know exactly why the US had joined this world war. I liked that I finally got to read on it to learn the backstory of this war.

Documents

I picked the phot on page 1029 that represented the need for the French to use African Americans in the war. This picture was described to have represented the reaction of the African Americans during a time where they were finally able to play a part in the war. At this time black were not trusted to hold any type of weapon due to the fear the French felt for them. With weapons people had no idea how any of the African Americans would react so therefor it as hard for them to make a decision. Due to dire circumstances, the French had to go with the option that could save their people as much as possible.

Chapter 19 p.931-957 + Chapter 19 p.958-971

Chapter 19 (931-957)

This chapter surrounds the selling and trading of opium which lead to the opium wars. During this time Opium became the central requirement of china and was a high sold item. Because this time wars were based on the high demanding drug, the Chinese became labeled as humiliating. They had built their country on strength and to be ripped down from it because all of its people were trying to get their next high, people became less and less afraid and lost more respect for them. I found this to be interesting because for a whole country like that to be put on such a high pedestal and to be taken away from that because of how the people are acting is crazy.

Chapter 19 Documents

The topic of discussion in this document was the way that the Chinese were treated in the 1870's and then some. Specifically seen through one of the women that grew up during this time was Qiu Jin. She discusses the things that she had to grow up with, for instance being shunned because she left her husband to better her education, and even wanting an education. Also she lost her head for trying to throw the Qing dynasty. During this time, the Chinese women were made by their fathers, to wrap things around their feet to prevent the growth of them, as well as they had to marry royalty, and not someone who she actually desired to marry. This document had made me very upset due to the way women were treated back then by the men and society. For the fathers to put their daughters through so much pain to make sure that natural growth does not happen is cruel and inhumane. I also didn't like that fact that women weren't able to choose who they'd spend the rest of their lives with.

Chapter 18 (p.879-912) & Documents (p.922-929)

Chapter 18

I liked the beginning of this section when the author described his summer in Ethiopia. He described the things that h saw while he was done there and that led to the intro to the chapter. I found it interesting how the first thing he noticed after he was directed to see the beautiful view, was that he saw children selling on the streets like an adult would be seen as doing. During this time it as very common for that due to the colonization from the other countries, which he goes onto explain further. Colonialization had made a huge impact on the way things function in our surroundings. From other countries taking 0over other countries, to making different types of people work. These people that worked were also categorized and called many names.

Documents

The visual sources in these documents displayed images of what was going on at this time. This had to deal with the many places that were taken over. One of the images also showcased the alliances between countries. While some of them displayed the French having lots of powered and who they were up against. Others displayed the significance of overcoming someone else's rule.

Chapter 17 Documents (p.862-877)

The Document that most interested me was the document on Art and Industrial Revolution. Me being someone who has a passion for art and loves art a little too much I took a huge liking to this section. The artists during this time used their art as a way of spreading awareness/messages of the Industrial Revolution. In particular the artists showed hoe the working life of the people inside the factories were as well as how they took their breaks. The first painting on page 874 showed the women relaxing, some even gossiping with their close friends. One thing I did not understand was that the women could be pictured not showing an angered emotion dour to the way they were treated during this time. In the next photo on page 875 the women and children were pictured again, but this time instead of relaxing they were working. These workers are pictured in a vegetable factory what looks to be like they are carving or peeling from a vegetable. I didn't like this picture too much to see the little kids working. I know this is what they were accustomed to at the time but I still find it to hard to imagine that people would ever find it okay to make little kids work when they should be living their childhoods.

Chapter 17 (p.827-861)

The topic of discussion in this section is the industrial revolution, which began in 1750 and ended in 1900. This revolution was developed from the global energy demands in fossil fuels. These fossil fuels include coal, oil, and gas. Originally humans used other sources that stored energy, these included, water, wind, and wood. But when the industrial revolution formed, they started burning the fossil fuels I mentioned above. When the industrial revolution had begun spreading to other countries like the united kingdom, people started changing the way they did things from what they were used to. The Brits ended up changing the way that they produced textiles and eventually other countries caught on as well. This revolution not only changed these things but also changed the way that foods were processed which effected agriculture. Machinery was used for this process and more chemicals and pesticides began to be used.

Foundresses Week Reflection

Due to my occupation, unfortunately I was unable to make it to the events of Foundresses week. I did have a chance to get the written reflections from our Dean and after reading them and picking the one I found most interesting this is what I came up with. In this reflection, the topic of discussion stems from Mathew Fox's talk. The questions that reveal themselves are on how humans perceive time. If we think time is infinite or finite. What happened before the big bang? Also if the universe we live is the only one. Another point brought up was if the galaxy we lived in was one of many that may reside outside of our galaxy. I found these questions to be very interesting because, I too had these questions when I took Astronomy class. I always wandered if God really just made one of everything or made more than one thing. I feel that we humans cant be the only special thing to be on this planet and that there is so much we still don't know about.

Chapter 16 (798-811) + Chapter 16 Documents (812-825)

Echoes

This section covered the topics of the Atlantic Revolution and the abolition of slavery. From the late 1700s to the late 1800s due to the informative enlightenment, the people during this time were growing to be more and more against slavery. With a turn down by the Quakers, the Haitians decided to make rise of the subject and get justice for slaves. This movement motivated others to stand up and rebel against the Brits as well. Followed by this was exactly what the Haitians wants to achieve, abolitionists decided to rise as well and brought governments to end the slavery in Britain around the 19th century. Due to the Brits being such a major place of residence, other places began to follow in their footsteps and end slavery as well. With the freedom of slaves, another movement also took place during this time. Feminists also shined and began making moves.

Documents

The documents in this chapter discuss letters made by antislave leaders, feminists in the French revolution, letters for the rights of people in the French revolution, as well as independence for countries.

SND Reading

After reading the article based on our school's foundresses, I got a big glimpse into more of what this school was built on, and represented. This school was founded by two women by the name of Julie Billiard and Francoise Blin de Bourbon. Julie had a condition called sclerosis. Francoise was upset with how bad things were around her at age 25. They both had played their separate parts in helping people before they had finally met in Amiens where the sister of Notre dame had been founded. These two women from completely separate lives but their thoughts together and decided to do what was right in the society. They decided to provide schooling for the poor and little girls. I also discovered that some of the buildings o campus are named after the places that our foundresses had been during the time they were living. I found that to be interesting. I didn't know too much about the school only that it was one of the first schools in California and that it used to be an all girls school but after reading this I now know much more.

Intro to Part 5 + Chapter 16

Part five

The topic of discussion in this section was based mainly on the rise of the Europeans as well as the mental processes of people in the long nineteenth century. In the beginning it gives us an intro to what the following chapter are going to discuss about how human beings began to slowly but surely move away from the negative events that were going on during this time. As far as slavery and women equality go, people were starting to become more accepting of it. The rise of the
Europeans discussed how they became on top of the other regions and what it took to get them there after others were in the forefront previous to them

Chapter 16

In the beginning of this section, discussed is the events that happened in Haiti that put them in debt to another country and their request for money after the big earthquake in 2010. The section that follows describes the Atlantic revolution ad where it took place. This revolution took place in many locations like, Latin America, France, North America, and Haiti. The revolution can be described as a global crisis due to the many locations it took place in. It talk about the French revolution and how the French were the first to get aid in the war by blacks n Haiti. I found this to be pretty interesting during the time since slavery had not ended yet and was still in full effect. I wonder how the leader was able to go to Haiti and get help at this time without an issue. Followed by this section comes the American Revolution and a deeper explanation of the French revolution. Both sections summarize what happened during both revolutions and ho they came about. Who helped and how they got through each. These revolutions were apart of the global crisis that was happening at this time.

Chapter 15 and Document 15.2

Chapter 15

In the section Science as Cultural Revolution, We get to know some of the scientist that played a part in the scientific revolution before Sir Isaac Newton coined the scientific revolution. Some of these scientist's are: Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo. Nicolas Copernicus was known for his theory on the sun being in the middle of the earth and the planets orbiting it. Galileo further explained this theory and begin study the spots on the Sun as well as Jupiter's moons. This also explained that the universe was bigger than we could imagine. When Newton came along, we were told what the laws of motion were, and he educated people on gravity. After his death, the human body became the topic of discussion and, the main focus was on where the heart was in our bodies, as well as its functions. Just like the earth which was discovered to be the "center" of the universe, Rene Descartes discovered that the heart was not the most important thing in our bodies and that it was just a machine. During and after the scientific revolution, women were shunned from participating in anything science. They were not allowed to be apart of anything the men were doing and could not get credit for any discoveries they had made. Instead, they had to go to convention's as their husbands assistants. I found this to be very unfair especially when a woman was the reason that an unknown comet was discovered ad instead her husband took credit for it. I'm glad women have come so far from this today.

Document 15.2

If i'm reading correctly, in the first section of the document Descartes is reviewing what is going on during this time. In the second section he explaining how things would be better for human kind if people didn't have to face a lot of the things they did, and that soon people would realize this. I'm not sure if this is correct but after reading it three times this is what I got from it.

Revanant

I had the chance to see this movie about a week ago, I found it very interesting. Spoiler alert in case anyone hasn't had the chance to see it yet. The movie focused on Leonardo DiCaprio's character's Glass revenge on John, (Tom Hardy) for killing his son. His son was mixed and John pointed that out a lot, even picked on the little kid for it. Glass got mauled by a bear really bad, and the captain asked for two men excluding Glass's son to stay with him for a few days and care for him until he healed. At this time he also had a fever. John and another character was volunteered to do so. A few day's passed, and John kills Glass's son as he watched, and was prevented to fight his son's killer back due to his condition. John told the other boy that was with him that Glass's son was no where to be found, and that they needed to leave behind Glass, and his son because the native's were on there way to kill them. The boy had believed him, and they left Glass behind. After doing any and everything he could to survive his journey back to his captain, the captain who was told that Glass had died, was faced with new information. A hunt was then made to find John, and in the process the captain was killed. Glass receives his revenge and the movie ends. Though revenge is not something I promote, I did think that Glass earned it after what John had done. John was a racist, and he murdered an innocent little boy. If Glass hadn't gotten his revenge, someone else would have. It was a great movie as far as survival for the time setting but as far as my taste in movies, it was okay.

Chapter 15 (715-739)

The Catholic Reformation on page 723, discussed how the Catholics decided to break away fro the protestant view. Before the protestants, they had rules on priest education before the protestants took over, so during the reformation, they wanted to restore their beliefs and became even more strict than they were before. This involved locking down the area, and flushing out the bad with new rules. For instance, putting more emphasis on priest education, censoring educational readings, ridding the area of heretics, and creating a new "motto" for their religious practices. I found this section to be very interesting when I'd found that the Catholics were even getting rid of people to take back their religion. I had a few questions that came to mind, it was mentioned that they burned the heretics, but I wondered how they went about finding heretics. What was the procedure they took in finding them? Were there women and children involved? Did they make it public or keep it in the dark?

Chapter 14 (669-687)

Between 1450 and 1750, the Atlantic slave trade was developing. This is the time that shaped how humans interacted with one another. Also taking place during this time was, Silver being obtained from the mines of Spanish America, and fur from Siberia. Western Europe was gaining many benefits from the Silver and Markets were booming in both Europe and China. These key places became the countries that shaped the Modern Era. During the Voyage that took place in 1497 and 1499, for the first time India received new visitors fro Europe. In this conquest to India, the motivation for making this long boat ride was to retrieve spices like, cinnamon, mace, cloves, nutmeg, etc. Some of these spices were claimed to be aphrodisiacs, and some medicinal. My question is during the retrieval of these spices, was it civil or violent? And if it was civil, what did the people of India get in return for the spices? Currency? Land? Or something else?

Chapter 13

Part 4 Intro (610-615)

This section discussed the Columbian exchange, and the transfer of plants and diseases. Also discussed was missionaries forcing conformity onto others and the scientific religion transforming in Europe. Due to some of these factors, their was a population change in some countries. These countries were, China, Japan, India, and Europe. The population in these areas doubled between the early 1400's to 1800. During some of this time there was a limitation in military for the mainland of Asia and Africa. This promoted a spread in Islam through those countries.

Chapter 13 (617-649)

In this chapter the ending to the Soviet Union came crashing down on December 25, 1991 around 7:30p.m. It was described that the signal that proved this was the flag being dropped. This had been the end to the communist party. Because the Soviet Union was so big there was a split in the states, which returned some old names and produced new ones.

Chapter 14 part deux

Chapter 14 - Commerce & Documents

Commerce

The thing that sticks out the most for me was The Middle Passage painting on Page 691 that illustrated the slave ship. To see how they were stored on this ship as if they were just random packages and not human beings was upsetting to me. Looking at the picture med me feel as if I was in their shoes. They were bunched up, without elbow room, it looked like it was cold out in there. They looked like they were barely being fed. Could you imagine going a few hours without food? A day? A few weeks? Maybe a month? Bones showing through your skin, fatigue, can't get up and do anything? How hard do you think that would be?

Documents

As I read this first Document on Olaudah Equiano, though it pains me to read about slavery, though I have not faced any of the painful things that my ancestors have had to experience, this only reminds of my favorite history class I was able to experience not too long ago. African American history is an intriguing subject. I can definitely relate to the large numbered family Olaudah had on his fathers side. I am so close to my brother I could not imagine having him ripped out of my arms as a child. When I was younger I was very dependent on my big brother and looked up to him.
