Chapter 23 + Visual sources

Chapter 23

This Chapter was about globalization and the change in economy. It showcased the different ranges of growth in the economy from back in the 70's to the 2000's. I felt like this chapter was really relevant especially with how the economy is now and how much the US is in debt right now. As unfortunate is it is the debt keeps getting deeper and deeper which really sucks. We keep expecting things to get better in the economy and they only get worse and worse.

I chose the image on page 1183 where a sweatshop has been captured. I remember growing up as a kid and hearing about sweatshops all the time. I didn't understand what they were as a little girl but the more and more I grew u I understood what they were, and came to find out a lot of the clothing brands I wear is made in a sweatshop. My history teacher even let us get a little taste of how a sweatshop was run during a class activity back in high school and from then on I tried to stay away from places that treated their workers like I was given a taste of that day. In sweatshops, not only are the workers treated unfairly but they aren't paid enough either. The minimum wage today is 10$ and I believe they don't even make half of that unless things have changed. I chose this specifically because I wish there was more awareness on how people are treated in the work environment and that people did their best to make a stand against the brutal forces against the workers.

Chapter 22 Documents (p.1120-1135)

I chose to blog about the visual source on page 1133 that show canes the promise land of Israel. This poster was to persuade people to migrate and even donate to make this land better than what the picture depicts. I found it to be very persuasive myself because the artist really made sure to make the land beautiful and used vibrant colors to showcase if you moved there you would be happier than where you were. I think this was a great way to try and pry people away from their homes. They definitely knew how to use propaganda to their advantage. On another note this is also an unfair way to try and capture the people's eye. I think this because wherever the people were before takes away from that land and forces the other lands to try and find ways to bring more people in. So to me its just a circle that the land owners would be going through at this time.

Chapter 22 (1087-1119)

The topics that this section discusses that was interesting to me were: Ghandi and South Africa's fight for independence. I remember reading about Ghandi a few years back and always hearing his name but, the things he stood for did not stick to my brain. After reading this section I have found out even more information about him. For instance, he was a lawyer that worked in south Africa that had his first taste of racism which had pushed him to change the way things were and unite the people. He started off with the Hindus and Muslims. And influenced by Ghandi, Nelson Mandela decided to take action in trying to persuade the whites not to be the sole keeper of the funds in a non violent way. After all it was this way due to the color on their backs and not their intelligence. Those that took power of South Africa didn't know if the towns people could control their own lands or not but assumed they could.

Chapter 21 (p.1035-1068) + Documents (p.1069-1085)

Chapter 21

The subject discussed in this chapter is communism through the years. While most popular in Russia, other countries like China and Cuba also ran on a communist based government. This form of political rules were based on the interest's of the lower class rather than middle class. Therefore they helped more with lower class than the middle. Just like any other country at this time at this time women had to fight for their rights, and those that did try their best to find better ways at going about life. Which meant they had to lower themselves to getting abortions, and divorces for their own equality. This pained me to read because of what women had to do just to get on the good graces of men at this point. Women had to fight a lot of battles for equality and even had to lose children which I found to be very unfair.

The image I chose was on page 1083 where a portrait of a woman working is placed. To me this image represented the fact that women had to work very hard for the things they wanted at this time and, that even meant doing hard labor like men. The painter portrayed the woman in the painting a happy from the smile on her face which I thought was a little controversial since I doubt women were happy to be in the position they were in at this time.

Chapter 20 (p.973-1017) + Documents (p.1018-1033)

Chapter 20

The discussion of this chapter was centered around the world wars. To introduce the section, the author reviewed the impactful industrial resolution, and followed up by describing how the first World War came about as well as the second. Next comes the different alliances that was made between countries at this time. This included: an alliance between Germany, Italy, and Hungarians as well as, the second triple alliance between Russia, France, and Britain. Because of these alliances and the means of protecting whom the countries were aligned with, world war 1 happened. This brough out a fight against the other team for things like control of weapons and colonies. The first War was involved with Germany, Britain, and the French, but the US. I found this section really interesting due to the fact that I didn't know exactly why the US had joined this world war. I liked that I finally got to read on it to learn the backstory of this war.

Documents

I picked the phot on page 1029 that represented the need for the French to use African Americans in the war. This picture was described to have represented the reaction of the African Americans during a time where they were finally able to play a part in the war. At this time black were not trusted to hold any type of weapon due to the fear the French felt for them. With weapons people had no idea how any of the African Americans would react so therefor it as hard for them to make a decision. Due to dire circumstances, the French had to go with the option that could save their people as much as possible.

Chapter 19 p.931-957 + Chapter 19 p.958-971

Chapter 19 (931-957)

This chapter surrounds the selling and trading of opium which lead to the opium wars. During this time Opium became the central requirement of china and was a high sold item. Because this time wars were based on the high demanding drug, the Chinese became labeled as humiliating. They had built their country on strength and to be ripped down from it because all of its people were trying to get their next high, people became less and less afraid and lost more respect for them. I found this to be interesting because for a whole country like that to be put on such a high pedestal and to be taken away from that because of how the people are acting is crazy.

Chapter 19 Documents

The topic of discussion in this document was the way that the Chinese were treated in the 1870's and then some. Specifically seen through one of the women that grew up during this time was Qiu Jin. She discusses the things that she had to grow up with, for instance being shunned because she left her husband to better her education, and even wanting an education. Also she lost her head for trying to throw the Qing dynasty. During this time, the Chinese women were made by their fathers, to wrap things around their feet to prevent the growth of them, as well as they had to marry royalty, and not someone who she actually desired to marry. This document had made me very upset due to the way women were treated back then by the men and society. For the fathers to put their daughters through so much pain to make sure that natural growth does not happen is cruel and inhumane. I also didn't like that fact that women weren't able to choose who they'd spend the rest of their lives with. 

Chapter 18 (p.879-912) & Documents (p.922-929)

Chapter 18

I liked the beginning of this section when the author described his summer in Ethiopia. He described the things that h saw while he was done there and that led to the intro to the chapter. I found it interesting how the first thing he noticed after he was directed to see the beautiful view, was that he saw children selling on the streets like an adult would be seen as doing. During this time it as very common for that due to the colonization from the other countries, which he goes onto explain further. Colonialization had made a huge impact on the way things function in our surroundings. From other countries taking 0over other countries, to making different types of people work. These people that worked were also categorized and called many names.

Documents

The visual sources in these documents displayed images of what was going on at this time. This had to deal with the many places that were taken over. One of the images also showcased the alliances between countries. While some of them displayed the French having lots of powered and who they were up against. Others displayed the significance of overcoming someone else's rule.
